Help Your Preschooler Find Their Stride and Thrive: Neuropsychological Evaluation Can Provide Clarity and a Path Forward

March 28, 2025

Have you wondered whether there is something different about your preschool-age child’s development? Maybe your child seems more active than other children their age. Or maybe they’ve been struggling to learn numbers and letters, and you’re concerned about their entry into kindergarten. While each child’s developmental trajectory is unique, it is important to recognize early signs of struggle so you can best support your child's needs as they grow.

Here are some situations in which a neuropsychological evaluation may be beneficial:

  • Your child was delayed in meeting developmental milestones for speech/language, fine motor, and/or gross motor skills

  • Your child is overly active or “busy” in a way that disrupts their ability to engage in age-typical activities

  • Your child is struggling to play with others, often preferring to play independently or in parallel with their peer, but not collaboratively with others

  • Your child has frequent and intense tantrums or emotional outbursts that affect family dynamics or interactions with their peers

  • Your child struggles learning letters, numbers, colors, or shapes

  • You have to provide frequent reminders for basic tasks and you often find yourself repeating yourself because your child is not listening

If your gut is telling you something is off and you have concerns these behaviors are affecting your child's ability to be successful in daily life, like at home, at preschool, or with peers, it can be helpful to get a head start on learning more about how to best support your child. Research has consistently shown the importance of early intervention. A neuropsychological evaluation can help you learn more about your child’s specific strengths and challenges and offers a comprehensive set of recommendations to set your child up for success in school, with peers, and at home from an early age.
